A day on the water, or a week of them

Day boats out of Turgutreis, blue cruises on a gulet, and private charter with a crew who know this coast. We have been putting people on boats here since 2011.

The difference

Day trip, or blue cruise?

In Bodrum the two get used as if they were the same thing. They are not, and the difference is simply where you sleep.

A day boat trip

You board on the Turgutreis quay mid-morning. The boat works its way round the islands and bays off the peninsula, anchors long enough at each one to swim, and has you back on the quay before the evening. Lunch is cooked on board. It is the cheapest day out on this coast, and it is what most people mean.

Out at 10:30, back around 18:00. Lunch and insurance included; drinks are extra.

A blue cruise

A blue voyage — mavi yolculuk — is the same coastline at a tenth of the speed, and you sleep on board. Three or four hours under way in the morning, then a bay for the rest of the day. Routes run south and west into the Gulf of Gökova: Knidos on its headland, Cleopatra's Island, and anchorages with nothing on them at all.

April to early November. Three or four hours under way each day; the rest of it is at anchor.

The season runs from April to early November. Outside it most of the fleet is laid up, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a cold day out.

Charter

Chartering a boat

There is no price list on this page, because a charter price does not exist until we know four things. Tell us those and we will come back with boats and real numbers.

A charter is the boat and its crew for as long as you want them. Most people take a gulet: broad, wooden, built along this coast, cabins below and nearly all of the living done on deck. A sailing yacht is quieter and faster and asks more of you. A motor yacht covers more sea in a day and burns more fuel doing it.

If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper certificate with recent sea time behind it, you can take a boat bareboat. If you do not, take a skipper — he will know which bays stay flat when the meltemi gets up.

What sets the price

The boat
Length, age, how many cabins, and how recently she was refitted.
The crew
A gulet normally comes with a captain and a cook. A bigger boat carries more people than that, and it sits in the weekly rate.
The dates
A week prices differently from three nights, and August prices differently from May.
Your party
Six friends spread across four cabins is a different quote from a family of four in two.

Fuel, food, harbour dues and the crew's gratuity are handled differently from one boat to the next. Whatever your quote covers, and whatever it does not, is written down before you pay anything.

The October regatta

Every October the peninsula's gulets race the BODTO regatta over four days and four stages. There are places aboard for passengers and for extra hands, not only for crew. Ask early and bring your passport — recent years have taken the fleet across to the Greek islands.
